What is PAN?
PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a 10-character alphanumeric identifier issued by the Income Tax Department. It is mandatory for filing taxes, opening bank accounts, and most high-value financial transactions.

Step-by-Step Process

Choose a portal
Apply via NSDL (Protean) or UTIITSL — both are authorised.

Fill Form 49A
Indian citizens use Form 49A; foreign nationals use Form 49AA.

Upload documents
Submit identity, address and date-of-birth proofs.

Pay the fee
Pay online; e-PAN with Aadhaar e-KYC is faster and cheaper.

Receive PAN
e-PAN arrives by email; the physical card is dispatched by post.
