Eligibility
A candidate must satisfy all of the following conditions to be eligible:
- Must be studying in Class V during the full academic session 2025-26 in a government or government-recognised school in the same district where admission is being sought.
- Must not have been born before 01 May 2014 or after 31 July 2016 (both dates inclusive). This age condition applies equally to all categories including SC, ST, OBC and Divyang.
- Must be a bonafide resident of the district where the JNV is located.
- Must have studied and passed Classes III, IV and V from a government or government-aided recognised school spending one full academic session in each class.
- Candidates who have already passed Class V in any previous academic session are not eligible under any circumstances.
- No candidate may appear in JNVST a second time.
- NIOS candidates who pass the 'B' certificate course on or before 15 September 2025 are also eligible, provided they are in the prescribed age group.
- Candidates from the state of Tamil Nadu are not covered as no JNV has been sanctioned there.
Reservation of Seats
- At least 75% of seats in each district are reserved for candidates from rural areas.
- Minimum one-third of total seats are filled by girls.
- SC and ST candidates get reservation in proportion to their population in the district (minimum 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST, subject to a combined cap of 50%).
- 27% reservation is provided to OBC students as per the Central List only. Candidates whose OBC category does not appear in the Central OBC List will be treated as General category candidates.
- Provision exists for Divyang children (Orthopedically Handicapped, Hearing Impaired, Visually Handicapped) as per Government of India norms.
- Rural-open seats are allocated block-wise on the basis of rural population.
- Transgender candidates will be included in the Boys category for reservation purposes.
Exam Pattern
The JNVST 2026 is an OMR-based, objective-type test of two hours duration (11:30 AM to 1:30 PM) with 80 questions carrying 100 marks.

- Each correct answer carries 1.25 marks.
- There is no negative marking.
- Divyang students get an additional 40 minutes.
- Candidates must secure minimum qualifying marks: 14 in Mental Ability, 7 in Arithmetic, and 7 in Language.
- Only Blue or Black ballpoint pen may be used on the OMR sheet. Use of pencil is strictly prohibited.
- No candidate will be permitted to leave the hall until the full allotted time is over.
- Candidates must be seated by 11:00 AM; late entry will not be permitted.
Languages of Examination
The test is conducted in the medium opted by the candidate at registration. The language chosen cannot be changed later. Languages available vary by state and union territory. A few examples:
- Andhra Pradesh: Hindi, English, Telugu, Marathi, Urdu, Oriya, Kannada
- Assam: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bodo, Garo, Bengali, Manipuri (Bangla Script), Manipuri (Meitei Mayek)

- Gujarat: English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi
- Karnataka: Hindi, English, Kannada, Telugu, Marathi, Urdu, Malayalam, Tamil

How to Apply Online
- Visit the NVS admission portal listed in the Important Links section.
- Read the prospectus fully to confirm eligibility before starting registration.
- Keep the following documents ready in JPG format (10 to 100 KB each): candidate photograph, parent's signature, candidate's signature, and Aadhaar or residence certificate.
- Fill in basic details including State, District, Block, Aadhaar number, APAAR ID and PEN number in the application form.
- Upload the required photographs and signatures.
- Submit the application. Registration is free of cost and can be done from any device.
- Note the registration number and password received via SMS for future login.
- A correction window will be opened after the last date to modify Gender, Area, Category, Disability and Medium of Examination fields only. No other corrections will be entertained.
Documents to Submit After Selection
Provisionally selected candidates must produce the following original documents at the time of admission:
- Birth certificate issued by a competent government authority (proof of date of birth)
- Eligibility proofs as per NVS conditions
- For rural quota candidates: certificate from a competent authority confirming Class III, IV and V were studied in a rural area institution
- Residence certificate of the parent from the district where the JNV is located
- Aadhaar Card copy of the candidate (as per Aadhaar Act section 7)
- Certificate from the Headmaster regarding Class III, IV and V study details
- Medical fitness certificate
- Undertaking for Migration
- Disability certificate (if applicable)
- SC/ST community certificate (if applicable)
- OBC community certificate as per Central List (if applicable)
Important Point
- Rural open category seats are block-specific. Candidates must check the block details of their district and fill them correctly in the application form.
- The OBC category must be in the Central OBC List issued by the Government of India. State OBC lists are not accepted.
- No request to correct or modify data submitted in the application will be entertained after the last date.
- Admission under provisional selection does not guarantee final admission; original documents are verified before final confirmation.
- Candidates are advised to apply for TC from their parent school only after document verification and admission confirmation by the JNV concerned.
- Repeat candidates will be identified using application data from previous years and will not be permitted to appear.
