Recommended candidates of TGC-144 whose merit is below the allotted vacancies of their respective Engineering stream may be offered the Short Service Commission (Tech) Course (October 2027), subject to meeting all other eligibility conditions and the availability of unused SSC(T) vacancies for the respective Engineering streams.
Selection Process
The five-stage selection funnel runs from online application to a joining letter at IMA Dehradun.
Online Application - Submit on the Officer Entry portal (link in Important Links) within the application window.
Shortlisting - The Integrated HQ of MoD (Army) reserves the right to shortlist applications based on the vacancy-to-call-up ratio for each Engineering discipline / stream without assigning any reason. The cut-off is applied stream by stream on the cumulative percentage of marks up to the final semester / year. The cut-off percentage is published in the month of June 2026.
SSB Interview (5-day, two-stage) at one of four Selection Centres:
- Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh)
- Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh)
- Bengaluru (Karnataka)
- Jalandhar (Punjab)
Shortlisted candidates log into the website and select their SSB Centre and date on a first-come-first-serve basis during the two-week window in June 2026. Once selected, the SSB Centre and date cannot be changed. The Call Up letter is issued by the respective Selection Centre only through the candidate's registered email ID and SMS - no request for change is entertained. Stage 1 (screening) weeds out same-day; Stage 2 is conducted by a Psychologist, Group Testing Officer and Interviewing Officer for those who clear Stage 1.
Medical Examination - Conducted for SSB Stage-2 recommended candidates. Medical standards and procedures are as published on the Officer Entry portal. SSB medical validity is 270 days from the SMB date to the PCTA joining date. A candidate who has undergone any earlier SSB medical (SMB/AMB/RMB) and been declared 'Med Fit' need not undergo medical again after the TGC-144 SSB, provided the medical SMB date to TGC-144 commencement (01 January 2027) is less than 270 days. Candidates already undergoing training in any PCTA do not need a fresh medical even after the 270-day window. Medical Board proceedings are confidential.
Merit List - Prepared engineering stream-wise based on the marks obtained at SSB. Tie-breakers in order: older candidate ranked higher → higher percentage of marks in the qualifying degree. Higher educational qualifications and previous performances have no role in the merit list.
Joining Letter - Issued in order of merit, up to the number of stream-wise vacancies, to candidates who are medically fit and meet all eligibility criteria, for pre-commission training at IMA Dehradun.
Candidates must report within 07 days of the reporting date in the Joining Letter; failure leads to cancellation, and the next candidate in merit is issued the letter.
Training and Commission
- Pre Commission Training Academy - Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun.
- Duration - About 12 months, January 2027 to December 2027.
- Stipend - ₹56,100 to ₹56,400 per month during training (Pay Matrix Level 10 starting pay). On successful commissioning, the training period is not treated as commissioned service, but arrears on admissible allowances during training are paid to cadets.

A candidate who marries after the date of application - even if successful at SSB and medical - will not be inducted, and his candidature will be cancelled.
- Cost of training - Borne by the Government. A cadet withdrawn for personal reasons is liable to refund training cost at ₹16,260 per week (annual increment of 8%) for the period of stay at IMA, per MoD letter No 16(1)/2017-D(GS.II) dated 15 March 2022.

Important Instructions
- Mismatch in Engineering Stream - Any variation between the nomenclature of stream on the degree certificate / marksheet and that submitted in the online application will result in cancellation of candidature (refer Para 3 of the official notification).
- Variation in Name of the candidate or parents on educational documents versus the online application must be supported by an affidavit declaring the variation (refer Para 11(a) Note 3).
- Aadhaar number and matriculation certificate are mandatory for registration on the Officer Entry portal.
- No changes to submitted online application details are allowed after closure of application. No representation is entertained.
- CGPA / Grades must be converted to Marks using the formula adopted by the concerned university while filling 'Marks obtained in Graduation' in the online application. Any discrepancy at any selection stage leads to cancellation of candidature.
- Profile and online application name / parents' name / date of birth must match the Matriculation / Secondary School Examination certificate. Any variation leads to cancellation.
- Only one online application may be submitted. Multiple applications from the same candidate result in cancellation of candidature, and no representation is entertained.
- DigiLocker certificates are NOT valid replacements for original certificates at SSB.
- SSB Centre and Date once selected cannot be changed - the Directorate General of Recruiting reserves the right to change centre / date in exceptional circumstances, but candidate requests for change are not entertained.
- UPSC debarment - The candidate must never have been debarred from any examination by UPSC.
- Criminal record - The candidate must never have been arrested or convicted by a criminal court, or involved in any case. Disclosure at any stage of selection or pre-commission training leads to cancellation of candidature / cadetship and removal from the Academy by IHQ of MoD (Army).
- Disciplinary withdrawal from NDA, IMA, OTA, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy or any Service Training Academy makes the candidate ineligible to apply.
- Hindi and English notification - Both language versions are of equal effect; the English version prevails in the event of any discrepancy between the two language versions.
- Personal restrictions under Article 33 of the Constitution and the Army Act / Army Rules apply on joining the service.
Helpline and Query Channel
For any query on centre allotment, SSB date, merit list, joining instructions and related information, use the Feedback / Query option on the Officer Entry portal listed in Important Links - this is the only channel through which queries are answered. Before submitting a query, candidates are advised to read the notification, the tickers on the portal, Joining Instructions, Frequently Asked Questions and other uploaded instructions thoroughly. Queries received up to 3 days before the closing of online application will be entertained; queries closer to the deadline are not answered to ensure timely response.
Common Mistakes That Cancel TGC-144 Candidature
- Picking the "wrong" stream name in the online form - Use the exact stream name printed on your degree certificate / marksheet. Any variation between the degree-certificate stream name and the online application is grounds for cancellation, even when the AICTE-approved equivalent is the same.
- Relying on a DigiLocker certificate at SSB - The Selection Centre will reject it. Carry physical originals; for schools that issue e-certificates only, get a colour printout authenticated by the institution in writing.
- Skipping the CGPA-to-Marks conversion certificate - The online application requires Marks obtained, not CGPA. A discrepancy between your university's conversion formula and what you fill on the portal cancels candidature at any stage of selection.
- Submitting more than one application - Even an accidental second registration cancels candidature. Apply once and use 'Save & Continue' inside the same form to refine entries.
- Marrying after applying - A candidate who marries after the application date - even if he clears SSB and medical - will not be inducted. Plan personal timelines around the training year (January to December 2027) before applying.
- Missing the matriculation parents-name requirement - The Indian Army accepts ONLY the Matriculation / Secondary School certificate as proof of name, parents' name and date of birth. If your parents' name is missing on the matriculation cert, carry a PAN, Aadhaar, Passport or Driving Licence with matching parents' names - and ensure the online application matches that document exactly.
Final Words
The TGC-144 entry is one of the most direct routes for unmarried male engineering graduates into a Permanent Commission with the Indian Army, with 30 vacancies for the January 2027 IMA Dehradun batch and a one-year training programme that opens up a CTC of around ₹17 to 18 lakh per annum on commissioning. Eligible candidates should apply through the Officer Entry portal listed in Important Links well before the 11 June 2026 deadline, review every detail of stream name, age and parents' name against their matriculation and degree documents, and prepare for the five-day SSB at one of Prayagraj, Bhopal, Bengaluru or Jalandhar.
